
How to become a pilot

Student Pilot License
A student pilot must first secure his student pilot license. An applicant for a student pilot license must be not less than 16 years of age. In case of a minor a parental consent is necessary. He must be able read, speak and understand English as this is the generally accepted language in international aviation. He must hold a current Class 2 Medical Certificate, which can be secured from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). For Filipino applicants, they must have their PSA Birth Certificates and NBI Clearances. For foreigners, they must have their Special Student Permit (SSP) and their Alien Certificates of Registration (ACR) issued by the Bureau of Immigration (BID). Private Pilot License
An applicant for a private pilot license must at least be 17 years of age. He must receive and log basic ground training on: (a) air law; (b) aircraft general knowledge; (c) flight performance and planning; (d) human performance; (e) meteorology; (f) navigation; (g) principles of flight; (h) radiotelephony; (i) airport operation; and (j) equipment qualification course. He must have completed not less than 40 hours of flight time as pilot of airplanes, a total of 5 hours may have been completed in a flight simulator or flight procedures trainer. The applicant must hold a current Class 2 Medical Certificate. A holder of a Private Pilot License is privileged to fly, but not for remuneration, as pilot in-command or co-pilot of any airplane engaged in non-revenue flights. The validity period of the license is 5 years.

Commercial Pilot License
An applicant for a commercial pilot license must at least be 18 years of age. He must receive and log advance ground training on the different aviation subjects. Inclusive of his experience as a private pilot, he must have completed not less than 150 hours of flight time as pilot of airplanes, a total of 5 hours may have been completed in a flight simulator or flight procedures trainer. The applicant must hold a current Class 1 Medical Certificate. A commercial pilot may exercise all the privileges of the holder of a private pilot, act as pilot-in-command in any airplane engaged in operations other than commercial air transportation, act as pilot-in-command in commercial air transportation in any airplane certificated for single-pilot operation; and act as co-pilot in commercial air transportation in airplanes required to be operated with a copilot. A commercial pilot license is valid for five (5) years

Flight Instructor License
An applicant for a flight instructor rating must at least be 18 years of age and a holder of a commercial pilot license with at least 200 flying hours. He must also receive and log ground training for the following subjects: (a) techniques of applied instruction; (b) assessment of student performance in those subjects in which ground instruction is given; (c) the learning process; (d) elements of effective teaching; (e) student evaluation and testing, training philosophies; (f) training program development; (g) lesson planning; (h) classroom instructional techniques; (i)use of training aids; (j)analysis and correction of student errors; (k)human performance relevant to flight instruction; and (l) hazards involved in simulating system failures and malfunctions in the aircraft. A flight instructor may supervise solo flights by student pilots; carry out flight instruction for the issue of a private pilot license; commercial pilot license and other ratings, subject to existing conditions. A flight instructors license is valid for five years.

Airline Transport Pilot License
An applicant for an airline transport pilot license must at least be 21 years of age. He must receive a comprehensive ground training on the different aviation subjects. He must have completed not less than 1,500 hours of flight time as pilot of airplanes, a total of 100 hours may have been completed in a flight simulator or flight procedures trainer. The applicant must hold a current Class 1 Medical Certificate. An airline transport pilot may exercise all the privileges of the holder of a private pilot, a commercial and of an instrument rated pilot; act as pilot-in-command and co-pilot in airplanes in air transportation; if authorized, may instruct other pilots in air transportation service in aircraft or approved simulator training device of the category, class and type for which he is rated. His license is valid for five (5) years.

Instrument Rating
The holder of a pilot license shall not act either as pilot-in-command or as co-pilot of an aircraft under instrument flight rules (IFR) unless such holder has received proper authorization from the CAAP. Proper authorization shall comprise an instrument rating appropriate to the aircraft category.
